program notes

RZW (2002). The score of this piece was constructed by mapping permutations of 5 sounds against permutations of accent patterns in a 5 meter. The reading of them is made according to their symmetries and when coincidences between both happen, the resulting clash forms a special 'fill in' for the percussion. The structure of the piece has this section as the middle and longest one, surrounded by contrasting sections made in a similar but freer fashion. The electronic sounds were generated in the analog studio from the multitrack recording of the percussion with several passes of processing. The middle part used synthetic sounds of various kinds and the outer parts process the percussion sounds. The computer was used at a later stage to synchronize all the generated electronic parts together and to do the placing and panning in the quadraphonic field. The live performance of this piece has the electronic sounds following the percussion and sometimes the percussion following the electronics, which resembles the process the composition went through. Although the piece is abstract, it has a playful (and even humorous) character.
