Aluminum Leaves

mp3 (2.2 mg)

program notes

I am fascinated by the musical possibilities raised by The Electronic Hammer. In particular, I am excited by the manner in which they approach electronics as performers, and I tried to create a piece that would properly accommodate their talents. To this end, I completed a score with instructions for the electronics left somewhat open, so that the computer performers (Juan Parra and Henry Vega) could bring their musical expertise to the performance in the same manner that Diego Espinosa does as the percussionist - by using their own highly refined techniques and ears to create the best possible composition based on the outline I provided with notes and rhythms and dynamics arranged on the page. Aluminum Leaves was composed for The Electronic Hammer in the spring and summer of 2005.
